In the article, "Why Doesn't God Answer My Prayers," J. Carl Laney discusses some of the reasons for unanswered prayers. He shares the account of a friend who passed away after battling a form of cancer. Many people had prayed for physical healing, but he died anyway. Sometimes it is difficult to understand how an all-loving and all-powerful God doesn't grant our desires despite having the ability to do so.
Laney points out that prayer consists not merely of asking God for things, but is also a way of communicating with God. It is a time for worshipping, giving thanks and asking forgiveness when we fall short.
Laney lists several possible reasons for God saying "no" to our petitions:
- A lack of faith
- Sin in our lives
- Inability to forgive others
- Wrong timing
- Our prayers don't coincide with God's plan for our lives.
At times, we will all wonder why God didn't step in and answer our requests. During these times, we must decide whether we will trust God or not. A scripture that you may find helpful is found in Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV). “'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'"
