Heartbroken
“God is near to the brokenhearted.”
- Cindy Bultema
Cindy's fiancé, David, died in a freak accident five months before they were to get married. David's sudden death left Cindy extremely angry and frustrated. She asked questions like: "Why would God allow this?" "Why Would God take David home?"
The day of the incident, family and friends tried to console her, but there were no words that helped. Even the miracle of Cindy’s agnostic Dad, accepting Christ as His Savior at the funeral, was not enough. Cindy just wanted David back. Ultimately Cindy learned that God could handle her emotions, and day by day began to bind up her broken heart.
If you have experienced the death of a loved one, here are some points to consider:
Hold onto hope
God can handle your emotions, you just need to feel them. Don’t numb the pain, feel it.
Be honest and open
Let others know how you’re feeling. Accepting help is okay.
Be prayerful and expectant
Even if you don’t know how to pray, just keep talking to God.

Words to Live By:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18 (NIV).
“But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish” Psalm 9:18 (NIV).
Dr. Ron’s Perspective:
One moment life can be rolling along smoothly, and suddenly, a traumatic life event occurs. It catches you off guard and shakes the foundation of your world. Anxiety, fear, and depression are common emotional reactions. You might experience sleepless nights and a prevailing sense that life will never be the same. This can also be a time of uncertainty and insecurity. You may wonder, “Why me? Why now? What does the future hold?” This can be a powerful opportunity where one’s faith can be challenged, and the purpose of life contemplated, perhaps for the very first time. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of your life, strengthening your faith by putting your trust in God. Talk to him, the One, who already understands your fear and wants to comfort you. He is waiting and ready to listen. You are never truly alone!
