Child of the King – Barry’s Story

I had neck surgery in 2006: c6 & c7, 2 plates, 4 screws. My first surgery did not go well and I had to have a second surgery in March 2006. After the surgeries, I started falling for no reason and for my own safety I was put into a wheelchair.

I was in and out of the hospital several times that year with some severe complications. At one point, I had to have a tube down my throat so I could breathe. I was on some strong pain meds (methadone, morphine and numerous other drugs) that just helped me to survive. I was diagnosed as terminally ill during this time and only given 6 to 12 months to live.

My diagnosis was Cortical Basal Ganglionic Degeneration. I was prayed for and anointed for healing in 2008, but refused to believe it because I was addicted to the pain meds! In March of that year, the stress on my family was too much, and I knew I needed help.

I checked myself into rehabilitation. I experienced no withdrawals! The day I was released, not in a wheelchair, I came home and walked a mile on a treadmill. The last time I saw my wheelchair, I loaded it into my in-law’s van for them to use. It was while I was in rehab that God showed me He had bigger plans for me than what I ever knew.

I am currently working 70 hours a week and play golf along with participating in other normal activities. It is only by God’s love, grace, and mercy that I’m where I am today. Praise and glory be to God in the highest for what He has done in my life! I currently serve on the Care Team at my church and help others as they decide to follow Jesus. My story has become my testimony as God continues to help me in my daily walk with Him.
